Something to Say About Arbor Day

The first Friday in December is designated as Arbor Day here in South Carolina. Arbor Day was the response of J. Sterling Morton, a Detroit man who moved to a tree deprived part of the Nebraska Territory in the late 1800’s. His love and passion for trees was met with enthusiasm by those around him. His skill and persuasion with the written word put him in a position to be an advocate for tree planting throughout the territory. In 1872, Morton proposed the first Arbor Day. Today, Arbor Day is embraced by every state in the country. Each year on the designated day for their state, landowners, school children, civic groups, and regular folks plant trees to celebrate Arbor Day and continue the legacy started by Mr. Morton over 140 years ago.
