On-site Consultation

Prior to removing any stump, your arborist will perform a site assessment and let you know which options are available. Depending on the location, size of the stump, and your future plans, your arborist may recommend grinding or excavating.

Next, the area is prepared for the stump removal process, taking all necessary steps to check for buried utilities and protect your home and landscaping. Why Choose Sox & Freeman

K

Certified Arborists

At Sox & Freeman we aren’t just a few guys with chainsaws – every one of our crews is led by an ISA-certified arborist. Our arborists are there to help you know what removal options are available, how to best replant near removed-trees, and to protect the root systems of the rest of your plantings.

K

Long-term Relationships

Sox & Freeman has been in business for 75 years and some of our clients have been with us for three generations. Like the trees we work with, we take a long view of the world and prioritize developing long-term relationships over short-term gain.

K

An Ongoing Commitment to Training

We don’t rest on our laurels and are always training the next generation of arborists. At Sox & Freeman our non-certified crew members are given the time, training, and resources to become certified arborists via our Arborist Development Plan.

No experienced arborist will say that their profession is without risk – and we’re as experienced as they come. To that end we safeguard both our crews and your property with industry leading insurance and workers compensation plans.

Why should I work with a certified arborist?

At Sox & Freeman our crews always include an ISA-certified arborist. The International Society of Arboriculture sets standards for arboriculture (tree care) and requires training, testing, and continuing education to qualify for and maintain certification.

When you work with a certified arborist you can rest easy knowing that the stump grinding or removal process will not negatively impact any of your nearby trees.

Will my stump resprout?

Certain species of trees, like Crepe Myrtles, are prone to resprouting even after being cut or ground. In these cases our arborists may suggest the application of herbicides to prevent this from occurring.

What areas do you service?

We offer professional tree services across the South Carolina Midlands and the surrounding areas, including Blythewood, Cayce, Chapin, Columbia, Irmo, Lexington, and West Columbia.

We are Located at: 3615 Phillips Street, Columbia, SC 29203

Can you remove tree stumps next to my house, fence, or decking?

In most cases, yes, we generally only need a few inches of clearance to remove tree stumps. Your arborist will determine if we have enough clearance to move forward, as we know each situation can be unique.

Will I be able to replant in the area where the stump was removed?

When a stump is removed the bulk of the original tree’s root system remains in place. Over time, these roots will break down – but this process is not instantaneous and in the short term may make it challenging for new trees to take root in the same location.

Our arborists will be able to offer recommendations for what sort of plantings will work best in the area and offer suggestions for siting new trees. One way to make it easier for new trees to take root is to go with stump excavation. Instead of grinding the stump to below ground level, we will instead extract the vast majority of the stump and its root system.

If you are planning on replanting in the area, our arborists will be happy to discuss your options with you!
